When people think about rubbish removal, they usually picture the team loading the truck and clearing away unwanted furniture, household items and waste.

But there is a lot that happens behind the scenes to make sure our trucks are on the road and ready for the next job.

One of the people responsible for keeping everything moving is Tanguy, our Fleet Manager and Diesel Mechanic.

Keeping Our Trucks on the Road

Our trucks work hard.

Unlike many vehicles, they spend much of their working day stopping, starting, carrying heavy loads and travelling between customers, recycling facilities and waste transfer stations across Brisbane.

As our trucks have become older, keeping them properly maintained has become increasingly important.

Tanguy’s main responsibility at our Loganholme yard is servicing, maintaining and repairing our trucks and other equipment. He carries out preventative maintenance, diagnoses mechanical problems and deals with repairs before they become bigger issues.

Tanguy has completed a Certificate III in Heavy Commercial Vehicle Mechanical Technology and a Certificate IV in Automotive Mechanical Diagnosis in Australia.

Finding Diesel Mechanics Has Become Increasingly Difficult

One of the challenges we have experienced over the last few years has been finding local diesel mechanics who are able to work on our trucks when we need them.

There are some excellent workshops around Brisbane, but demand for heavy-vehicle mechanics is high. In the past, we have sometimes had to wait days — or even weeks — before a truck could be inspected and repaired.

For a small business like ours, having a truck sitting idle isn’t just a repair bill. It means fewer jobs we can complete, less capacity for our customers and additional pressure on the remaining truck and team.

Having Tanguy working with us has made a significant difference.

Instead of relying entirely on external workshops, many servicing, maintenance and repair jobs can now be carried out at our own yard. Problems can often be identified early, preventative maintenance can be scheduled around our workload, and we are far less dependent on workshop availability.

Since Tanguy joined the business, we haven’t had a single day where both of our trucks have been off the road at the same time.

For a business that depends on its trucks every day, that reliability is incredibly valuable.

More Than Just Fixing Trucks

As anyone who has worked in a small family business knows, job descriptions tend to be fairly flexible.

While Tanguy’s main responsibility is looking after the fleet, he is also happy to help wherever he is needed — whether that’s looking after equipment and the yard, organising maintenance, helping the team or stepping into other roles when we’re particularly busy.

That’s an important part of how 1300 CLEAROUT operates.

We started the business as a family-run Brisbane company, and even as we’ve grown, we’ve tried to maintain that same approach: a small team where people know each other, take responsibility for their work and are prepared to help one another.

Preparing for the Next Stage of 1300 CLEAROUT

Reliable trucks are essential if we want to continue growing the business.

With Tanguy helping us manage and maintain the fleet, we are in a much stronger position to expand without simply multiplying our maintenance problems.

Our plan is to eventually add more trucks to the fleet, allowing us to service more customers across Brisbane while still providing the reliable, straightforward service that 1300 CLEAROUT has been built around.

So, while customers might not often see Tanguy when we’re clearing a property, there’s a good chance his work behind the scenes helped make sure the truck arrived in the first place.
